High blood pressure or hypertension refers to when your blood pressure is higher than recommended levels (typically >140/85 mm Hg).

What is High Blood Pressure?

High blood pressure does not usually cause any symptoms unless it is very high e.g. >200/100 mm Hg, when you may experience headaches or chest pain. If high blood pressure is not treated, it may places you at risk of a heart attack, stroke or kidney failure in the longer term.

There are many reasons people develop high blood pressure e.g. it may run in your family. Being overweight or physically inactive may also contribute. Eating the wrong type of food such as a lot of processed food with a high salt content or drinking too much alcohol are other common causes.
